Welcome to British Literature with Mr. Grenier! Each tab will bring you to the different units (topics) that we will be covering this school year.
Course Overview:
Senior English is a full year course in which literature (The British Quest: Changing Identities), writing conventions, vocabulary, and critical writing assignments are integrated based on the Common Core State Standards that were created to “prepare America’s students for college and career.” In accordance with the English Language Arts Curriculum Framework for the West Warwick School System, this course will mainly focus on British Literature from the Anglo-Saxon period, the Medieval period, the Elizabethan period, the Seventeenth Century, the Neoclassical period, the Romantic Movement, the Victorian Era, and the Modern Era.
Utilizing literary works (fiction, non-fiction, poetry, and drama) from selected authors of these periods, students will be expected to produce clear and high-level critical responses to their reading. In addition to that, students will be required to produce an in depth research paper that demonstrates their mastery of research skills taught and reviewed during the past three years. This culminating assignment will enable students to show their ability to synthesize information in a logical and clear manner.
Several rubrics, which are designed to assess the creativity and content of each individual student, will be the method of evaluation for all written and enrichment assignments. This course will not only provide students with in depth academic development, but offer students several opportunities to meet the portfolio requirements for all graduates of West Warwick High School.
Course Objectives:
Students will be exposed to several types of literary works in British Literature. While keeping a literary journal, students will analyze/discuss the historical context of each literary work and critically respond to each author’s thematic purpose. In addition to that, students will use textual evidence to support their assertions presented in their critical essays. In addition to that, students will recognize and incorporate the different literary styles studied in their writing assignments.
